Timing Challenges in Multiaxis Robotics and Machine Tool Applications

Industrial robotics and machine tool applications involve the precise, coordinated movement of several axes in space in order to accomplish the job at hand. In this article, find out more about the motion control cycle, including existing problems and new solutions from Analog Devices.

Industrial robots or modern CNC machines can have up to 12 axes of motion. Each axis comprises a servo drive, a motor, and sometimes a gearbox. The system is then interconnected over an Industrial Ethernet network, usually in a line topology. The Control cycle time of a system is usually equal (or similar) to the pulse-width modulation (PWM) of the underlying servomotor drive. Knowing that a fast data flow is key to having a fast cycle time, incorporating the right PHYs is imperative. Industrial ethernet PHYs from Analog Devices, such as the new ADIN1300 or ADIN1200, have industry-leading power and latency specifications, and are a great fit for time-sensitive applications such as those discussed above.
