From the smart phone in your pocket to the machinery that manufactured it, you can find an electrical connector in many forms. And if you’re a design engineer or a purchase engineer, it’s important to have some key factors in mind before making your connector selection.
Power
The power rating of a connector is a determining factor to consider, and the market offers a wide range of options. Before you begin your search, it’s imperative that you identify the correct power requirements first.
Amphenol’s Minitek® Pwr 3.0 and 4.2 High Current Connectors (HCC) are two options that are designed for power applications with current ratings up to 12A per contact for the 3.0 and 13.5A per contact for the 4.2. Wire gauge ranges from 20 to 16AWG for wire-to-wire and wire-to-board applications and both have fully isolated terminals.
Without keeping the proper requirements in mind, you run the risk of not having enough power carrying capability and efficiency for your application.

Speed
The overall performance of a connector relies on its signal transmission capability. Many of the latest connectors are made to meet high transmission speeds, but it’s still important to check the specifications to assure it is within your level of performance expectation.
Amphenol’s High Speed Flex Connectors can transfer data at rates up to 10Gb/s. It has a 0.3mm pitch, in-line layout, and back flip actuator with a locking feature for strong retention. This solution, provided by Amphenol, also complies with USB3.1/3.0, PCIe 3.0, SATA 3.0, Displayport and MIPI M-Phy standards.
Another high speed solution is Amphenol’s USB Type C. These scalable, super speed connectors are being used as the next-generation interface. They support a wide variety of protocols such as USB2.0/3.0/3.1 and meet high speed data transfer rates of 10Gb/s, 5A and 20V power supply. We live in an environment where information is at the touch of our fingertips. These interconnect solutions are ideal for the high-speed data applications used today.

Density
The density of a connector can also influence the overall performance of your design. The higher the connector density, the more compact your machine design can be.
Amphenol’s Boltrack™ Connector is a robust and reliable option for PoE (Power over Ethernet) devices. It features high power and signal performance and comes in a small form factor with four additional contact loading options. The Boltrack™ doubles the density of an RJ45 connector and takes up 30% less panel space.
This is especially important in the case of complex systems where machine design is becoming more compact and the expectation for power and data transfer rates continue to grow.

Temperature Resistance
Another important feature that adds to the quality of a connector is its capacity to withstand high temperatures. High-end connectors often pass through multiple levels of qualification to ensure an overall temperature resistance.
Amphenol offers a wide variety of temperature resistance solutions like the Minitek® 1.50mm connector. This solution has fully isolated terminals and is made with a UL94V-0 flammability rated nylon material and has an operating temperature of -40⁰C to +125⁰C.
Connectors that can take the heat are most often used in intricate machinery where they can maintain a high performance level such as various medical, industrial, and automotive applications.

Mating Features
The connector’s mating features also play an important role in determining the overall performance, quality, and durability. Amphenol’s Conan® 1.00mm Connector has a comprehensive range of terminal counts and mezzanine stack heights for signal speeds up to 5Gb/s. It allows for vertical versus vertical mating configurations for parallel board stacking applications as well as vertical receptacle versus RA header mating configurations which is useful for perpendicular stacking. It also has an audible “click” sound during mating to ensure a secure connection.
When choosing a connector, take the time to review the specifications of its mating features. The angle of mating, the number of mating cycles, the mating force and other important features will be clearly mentioned in the product specifications. This will help when searching for the right connector to match your requirements.
