Memory Card Connectors

What is the purpose of a memory card? Memory card connectors are often found in electronics that contain any form of removable memory, usually as an SD card connector. Examples of removable memory include Micro SD, SIM, Micro-SIM, MMC and Compact Flash cards. These cards allow for plug-in style memory sources to be used with electronics, whereas a soldered down application is not the most reasonable or functional choice for the application. In order for the various types of removable memory cards to be linked to the electronics, they need to be connected or mated together for a seamless interface. For seamless connections, it would be desirable to be able to solder in the memory card and then de-solder the memory card and remove it when needed. However, this approach is not practical. A memory card connector provides a solution, allowing the memory card to act as though it is electrically soldered or connected to the system electronics, while simultaneously allowing it to have the liberty and freedom of easy removal. A memory card connector acts as a receptacle which aligns the electrical pins to map them appropriately on the printed circuit board of the system, allowing information or data stored on the memory device to be easily transmitted to and from the memory card. The memory card connector is a receptacle with grooves to ensure proper insertion and alignment. The connector provides for electrical isolation where necessary and electrical continuity where appropriate. The connector also provides retention properties for the memory card as to avoid any undesired or unplanned removal of the memory card from the system.
