An Overview of the New Smoke Detection Standards

The new smoke detection standards for the U.S. and Canada bring new challenges to manufacturing and calibration margins. Learn more about what the new standards are and how two new tests, the hamburger nuisance test and the flaming polyurethane (PU) test, are affecting the design challenges of smoke detection 2.0.

A revised specification for U.S. and Canada smoke detection standards will be in effect as of May 2020 in an effort to mitigate one of the leading causes of death in fire-related events, false alarms. False alarms from cooking scenarios often lead to disconnecting smoke detectors in areas where detection is necessary. To create a safer smoke detection system, Analog Devices created the ADPD188BI, integrating two LEDs, a photodiode, and an analog front end to more accurately differentiate between nuisance sources, such as burned food, and actual fire events. The ADPD188BI also offers separate LED sourcing and a small form factor for use in intelligent building components. Get a closer look at the new standards and learn more about how the ADPD188BI can keep your next design in compliance with the future of fire safety.
