Introducing Arrow SpeedChips

When developing products to meet emerging standards, it is important to have a design approach that can rapidly accommodate the finalized requirements. In the past, FPGA-based IP would be used for these applications as the fluid and dynamic nature of FPGAs meant that they were able to adjust to these new standards. However, the integration of FPGAs was typically burdened with significant time and R&D expenses that made product design teams desire a simpler way to bring their products to market quickly.

In response to this need, Arrow has launched its SpeedChips line that allows proven solutions to be quickly integrated into products with emerging interface standards and protocols without any associated royalties or licensing fees.  These chips allow simplified designs, accelerated development schedule, reduced risk, and the avoidance of outside design service costs that FPGA development often requires.  

Arrow SpeedChips offer several advantages compared to in-house developments.   As a single-chip solution, SpeedChips help to simplify PCB design, reduce BOM costs, and keep production and assembly costs lower.  Time to market and development costs are also significantly reduced, as SpeedChips offer drop-in solutions for products that would traditionally require significant time investments in FPGA design and debug.  Before SpeedChips, product teams were frequently confronted with having to decide on one of two design tradeoffs – either commit to a significant amount of time developing the FPGA design and integrating the IP in-house, or paying the high costs of outsourced FPGA design services.    After completing the design, debugging was very difficult as problems could stem from many root-causes including FPGA design issues, timing closure, or other physical problems.  Even if the design worked, achieving good performance on high speed interfaces was hard to ensure without reference designs and established design practices.   

With SpeedChips, these problems are avoided as design and integration are as straightforward as dropping any other IC onto your PCB design.  Development platforms are also available for Arrow’s SpeedChips products.  Leveraging these low cost development kits allows designers to fully test the SpeedChips to ensure they are a good match to their product requirements. 

Arrow’s first SpeedChips products are the XRS7003 and XRS7004 series of HSR/PRP enabled gigabit Ethernet switches for fault tolerant Ethernet installations – the first off-the-shelf ICs of this type in the world.  


Arrow is continuing to invest and expand the SpeedChips product family to bring similar benefits to a broad range of other vertical markets that are lacking low-cost, chip-down solutions.  Stay tuned to for new product announcements, starting with our next SpeedChips that will bring new, exciting drop-in solutions for A/V bridging interfaces.
