Arrow & Infineon 240W USB PD 3.1 Sink Reference Design

The collaborative Arrow & Infineon 240W USB PD 3.1 sink Reference Design features 48V@5A PDO support, representing the highest level achievable within the latest USB specifications.

The REF_ARIF240WS3 reference design board is intended to support customer projects demanding the highest power sink capabilities from a single USB cable. It provides lab-proven hardware & software implementation of the USB PD 3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR) software stack and high-power USB PD3.1 schematic solutions, allowing to significantly reduce final costs and time-to-market.

High Power Capability: The new design demonstrates the USB PD 3.1 EPR implementation example allowing to sink up to 240W (48V@5A) from a single USB-C source.

Versatile Applications: The reference design board REF_ARIF240WS3 further extends existing power sink capabilities of the EZ-PDTM PMG1 MCU family of high-voltage microcontrollers from 140W to 240W, making it ideal for such power demanding and fast charging applications as: Light electric vehicles (eBikes, eScooters and personal mobility devices), drones and mobile robots, professional AV equipment, power tools, medical equipment, home appliances, home entertainment devices, etc.

Comprehensive Solution: This ultimate solution comprises a powerful combination – Arrow’s REF_ARIF240WS3, a 240W sink reference design board and Infineon’s USB PD3.1 source reference board REF_XDPS2222_240W1, enabling designers to be among the first in the market to offer a complete 240W USB PD3.1 source-sink solution.

REF_XDPS2222_240W1

Infineon 240W USB PD 3.1 Source Reference Design

XDP™ XDPS2222: PFC + hybrid flyback combo IC for 240 W USB PD form factor reference design

Infineon's REF_XDPS2222_240W1 is a high efficiency form-factor reference design, with 25 W/in3 power density, using XDP™ XDPS2222 PFC + hybrid flyback (HFB) digital combo IC.

The internal handshaking between the PFC and HFB controller and the adaptive bus voltage setting makes this controller perfect for applications with wide AC input and very wide output voltage range, such as USB PD extended power range (EPR) adapters and battery chargers.

  • HFB ZVS operation of high- and low-side
  • Fast responding HFB peak current control
  • Harmonized PFC & HFB operations
  • Pulse skipping at light load
  • Automatic PFC enable/disable control
  • Self-adjusting PFC bus voltage level
  • High power density
  • Extra-wide output voltage range
  • Low no-load input standby power
  • Enables high power density designs
  • Low external BOM cost and count
  • Configurable design with GUI tools
  • Adapters and Chargers
  • Battery Chargers
