From product updates to new releases and more, learn the latest about Windows IoT.

What’s Next for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise

Microsoft continues the Windows IoT roadmap into 2021 with their next “vNext” release. With this release, Microsoft is planning the Windows IoT platform will receive many new features and updates in the coming year.

These include silicon support expansion, reduction of up to 40% in the size of the operating system, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Users will also have the ability to run Linux workloads via Linux Containers with Azure IoT Edge on Windows.  This new 2021 LTSC release is expected to be available in late 2021 and should be based on build 21H2.

Next Version of Window IoT Enterprise

Windows IoT Enterprise vNext combines the best features from Windows 10 IoT Core and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 into a brand-new product.

Azure SQL Edge

Small-footprint, edge-optimized SQL database engine with built-in AI.

Azure SQL Edge simplifies IoT infrastructure by offering streaming, storage, and analytics all in one platform. It gives teams the power and flexibility to build solutions that run effectively either in a network-connected site, such as on a factory floor, or in a disconnected environment, such as on a remote oil rig. It is built on the same codebase as SQL Server and Azure SQL so application developers building solutions for SQL Server and Azure SQL can re-use their code and skills to build edge-specific solutions on Azure SQL Edge that work with or without network connectivity.

Azure SQL Edge benefits include:

  • Provides flexibility to develop solutions that work with or without network connectivity
  • Enables secure data movement of the local edge data to on-premises datacenters or to Azure
  • Offers support with standard tooling, programming languages, and a query language (TSQL) that are already familiar to developers and compatible with existing code
  • Enables artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics at the edge
Includes native support for ingesting time-series data
  • Delivers industry-leading security and support for regulatory compliance
