Connector Contact

Within a connector are many components not directly related to the transfer of charge or signal. These can be plastic insulation, locking mechanisms, structural reinforcement or aesthetic elements. The contact of a connector refers solely to the conductive portion used to transfer electricity. These are usually pins or receptacles, but can be any conductive contact between the two connectors.

Contacts have a huge variety of features based on application need. There are multiple metals, sizes, lengths and surface area ratings. Contacts are required to perform within the rated voltage and current specifications, environmental conditions and specified physical and mechanical loads. Finding the right combination of strength, conductivity and durability will ensure proper operation.

All contacts should provide a solid connection between the contact barriers. It is almost always recommended to use the same material for the contacts on each side of a connection to keep the specifications congruous. They must also be joined with proper and appropriate connector housing, or premature failure can easily occur.
