Fuse Accessories

Electrical fuses are available in multiple shapes, sizes, and ratings. To incorporate a fuse in a circuit so that it operates according to requirement and can be replaced conveniently and safely, certain accessories are needed. These are briefly discussed below.

Fuse Block: A fuse block or fuse holder is a structure into which a fuse can easily be inserted and held tight. The term ‘fuse block’ is more likely to be used in the context of power systems, while ‘fuse holder’ may be more commonly used in electronic systems. It should have a low insertion resistance of its own so that it does not cause a voltage drop, which results in power loss and heating.  The shape, size, and rating of the block are related to those of the fuse. Thus, a very large variety of fuse blocks are available to accommodate all types of fuses.

Fuse panel: A fuse panel houses a number fuses protecting different circuits. It may be open or covered. This arrangement allows easier fault tracing, isolation of loads and replacement of fuses. Sometimes the term fuse block is used refer to a panel housing more than one fuse.

Fuse Reducer: A fuse reducer is a mechanical adapter used to allow installation of fuses of smaller size in a block designed for larger fuses.

Fuse Puller:  Fuse terminals must make a firm and positive contact with the holder. This will imply that a certain amount of force will be needed to install or remove the fuse from its holder (block). A Fuse puller is a tool that allows the easy and safe removal of a fuse.

Blown Fuse Indicators: These are visual indicators that come on when the corresponding fuse blows. They help in easy fault tracing.
