DC to DC Converter and Switching Regulator Chip
A switching regulator chip is the central controller of a switching DC-to-DC converter. This type of converter is very efficient and can be configured to generate output supply voltages above (boost or step-up) or below (buck or step-down) the input supply. In the simplest form, a switching regulator consists of a switching element and an energy storage element. The switch is opened and closed periodically in order to energize the storage element and then release the stored energy into the load. The switching regulator chip contains all of the logic required to modulate the duty cycle of the switching element. Often, the switches are contained within the regulator chip, but the energy storage elements are usually not, and must be placed externally.
