Nuts are often used with treaded bolts.  They provide the most common fastening mechanism used in mechanical manufacturing and assembly. They are used to fasten electronic components and electrical circuit boards to a secure solid mounting surface or structure for stability.

Nuts are usually hexagonal in shape, facilitating a beautiful integration with tools used to tighten and loosen nuts. These tools are usually end wrenches, sockets, or adjustable wrenches. With the hexagonal shape of the nut, these can easily apply a torque to the nut and force it to tighten or loosen.  Pliers are not ideal for use with nuts as they can tend to strip or round the hexagonal shape off the nut, making it difficult to tighten further or loosen if need be. Threads on nuts are usually right handed threads, but they can also be a left-handed thread if the nut and bolt are drilled and tapped with left-handed threads.

Nuts can come in various sizes mainly driven by the size of different bolts. They can also be manufactured out of various types of metals. Metals can range from inexpensive soft metals to very expensive hard metals. Different applications require different metal strengths and thus it is important to ensure the nut and its material parameters are adequate for the design application.
