Heroes of Innovation - Birger Kollmeier

Birger Kollmeier increased the quality of life for generations to come when he successfully transferred the key benefits of binaural-hearing to hearing aid technology. His work means that those with hearing deficiencies can still lead a fulfilled life.

The people who change the world don't chase the spotlight. They're busy creating the things that make the world better. They are the heroes of innovation.

I discovered the field of physics quite early because of my love for music and because I built loud speakers for my band.  To the other physics it seemed like what I was doing wasn’t real physics and the medical doctors were always a bit skeptical because it had very little to do with typical surgical disciplines.

The binaural hearing aids are able to communicate with each other and able to take on many functions   that are normally assigned to the brain.

You have to find the solutions that support the interaction between both ears.  By knowing the difference between the ears, it allows us to recognize where a sound is coming from or if that sound is close by or far away.  This means that binaural hearing aid is not only a traditional hearing aid for the ears, but is also able to support the brain in certain ways.

The journey is far from over.  There’s still a lot more to be done to make hearing aids even more intelligent.  I hope that people will more actively acknowledge their hearing deficiencies and  they’ll wear a hearing aid because it’s stylish and not because they think they have to hide it.
