Smarter charging controller chips provide higher efficiency to mobile charging

LC7095xxx manufactured by ON Semiconductor is a highly integrated single chip for power bank control solution. It is designed to meet the strict requirements of the next-generation power banks. Using it to develop the next-generation lithium battery rapid charging products, it can simplify and accelerate the marketing time of the products.

LC709511F is a controller chip used in power banks and has all the functions needed by power banks. It supports Type-C port and Quick Charge 3.0 (High Voltage Dedicated Charger Port, HVDCP). The built-in switch controller can output from 5V to 12V to different devices according to QC protocol. It can also support various output power levels up to 30 W, by changing external MOSFETs.

In addition, LC709511FC supports USB Type-C DRP (Dual Role port) without connecting to external chips. It also supports USB BC 1.2 and battery level gauging. It can also display the status and battery level with four LED lights. Moreover, with the built-in LED driver, customers do not need to install an extra MCU. It also supports boost auto start-up, thermistor sensing function, and over-voltage/over-current detection to fulfill JEITA regulations, with a built-in safety timer. In addition, in low power consumption mode, it just needs 15μA low quiescent current, possessing all the basic functions of power banks.

Using LC709511F, it has Boost converter and QC (Quick Charge) protocol function, minimizing the cost of this solution. Its built-in port control circuit can identify portable device types and the most suitable voltage, supporting applications on universal adapter as well as simplifying setup for various kinds of batteries. When customers are charging smartphones, they do not need to press any button. Regarding the safety functions, it can avoid charging faulty batteries to make charging safer as well as lengthening the battery life.

In addition, ON Semiconductor also launches another power bank solution LC709501F. In addition to the functions of LC7095011F, it also supports USB-PD protocol. Moreover, LC709501F supports USB 2.0 communication, connecting iOS and Android Apps to allow the device to communicate with smartphones. Using its display panel, it shows messages regarding the batteries’ health and charging processes (charging time, time for battery use, and the cycles of completed charging).

As the number of mobile electronic devices is growing rapidly, power banks will become increasingly popular in the future. Accurate and reliable electric power display and the support of quick charging protocol will be the key to success. There is an increasing demand on power bank’s capacity, and there will be higher needs for the accuracy to for power bank.
