Silicon Labs Unveils a New Family of High-Speed, Multi-Channel Digital Isolators

Silicon Labs, with a strong track record of innovation and differentiation, recently introduced the Si88xx family of high-speed, multi-channel digital isolators. The quad-digital isolators with DC-DC converters are designed to provide a complete, highly integrated solution for signal and power isolation.

The Si88xx integrates Silicon Labs’s proven digital isolator technology with an on-chip isolated DC-DC converter. The fly-back topology DC-DC converter provides regulated output voltages of 3.3 or 5.0 V (or >5 V with external components) at peak output power levels of up to 2 W. This power may be used to supply the secondary side of the Si88xx, along with other circuits on the isolated side. Si88xx devices provide as many as four digital channels. The DC-DC converter has user-adjustable frequency for minimizing emissions, a soft-start function for safety, a shut-down option, as well as loop compensation. It is a fully integrated, secondary-sensing, feedback-controlled converter with dithering for low EMI. These DC-DC converters have an efficiency of 78 percent. 


The isolators require only minimal passive components and a miniature transformer. The ultra-low-power digital isolation channels offer substantial data-rate, propagation delay, size, and reliability advantages as compared to legacy isolation technologies. Data rates up to 100 Mbps are supported, and all devices achieve propagation delays of only 23 ns. Ordering options include a choice of DC-DC converter features, isolation channel configurations, and a fail-safe mode. All products are certified by UL, CSA, VDE, and CQC.


Conversions of 3/5 V to isolated 3/5 V and 24 V to isolated 3/5 V are supported. Si88xx products are highly reliable and come with a 100-year lifetime warranty. They produce ultra-low emissions and come in RoHS-compliant packages that are in a SOIC-20 wide body. The devices feature isolation of up to 5000 Vrms, as well as high transient immunity of 100 kV/µs (typical). They are AEC-Q100 qualified and offer a wide temperature range of –40 to +125 °C.


Applications for the multi-channel digital isolators include: industrial automation systems, hybrid electric and electric vehicles, isolated power supplies, inverters, data acquisition, motor control, and PLCs/distributed control systems.
