LCD Character Modules

LCD character modules are “characteristically” simple display devices known for their very low power consumption and long-term reliability. They are designed to display alpha-numeric characters in preset patterns and do not have the flexibility one may think of when considering an LCD as a computer monitor or television. In most cases, they are small displays only displaying 8 or 16 or 32 characters, utilized for status reports and small level communication.
In many LCD modules, there is no backlight present, meaning it operates in reflective mode. This means that ambient light is required to see the display characters through the use of a reflective element behind the liquid crystal assembly. In other regards, it operates as a backlit LCD, with a polarized light blocking crystal structure enabled by applied voltages.
LCD modules are commonly seen in calculators and other electronic devices where some visual communication is required for reasonable operation. Printers, microwaves, pagers, and digital watches are some other examples.
