In Back-To-School Spirit, Arrow Renews Its Support of Commerce PlazaArrow Electronics, Inc. kicks off the 2008-2009 school year by renewing its commitment to local educational programs with its participation in Commerce Plaza, a Long Island-based educational program in which fifth-grade students participate in a simulated business community. As part of its charitable contributions program, Arrow seeks out organizations and programs that offer the greatest opportunity for positive local impact. Arrow identified Commerce Plaza as a program that mirrors the company’s values by teaching future business leaders important lessons about business, commerce and good corporate citizenship. “Commerce Plaza is very excited about our partnership with Arrow Electronics,” said Jamie Bogenshutz, executive director, Commerce Plaza. “This contribution will enable us to continue providing a truly unique experience for several thousand children on Long Island. The future workforce of Long Island will be strengthened ‘one child at a time.’” More than 4,000 students from 15 Long Island school districts participate in Commerce Plaza each year. The program consists of more than 12 simulated civic and corporate “businesses” that work together to sustain and build a community. Businesses include a newspaper, mayor’s office, bank, medical and legal offices, food court, post office and a warehouse complete with supplies. Beforehand, students spend extensive classroom time learning about business, economics, entrepreneurship and banking. Each student is then assigned a job in a specific business. Besides researching and learning this “job,” students spend a full day performing their job responsibilities at the business simulation event. Arrow’s donation enabled Commerce Plaza to update and enhance the warehouse business portion of the program and computerize its inventory and distribution control. Additional ways in which Arrow and its employees contribute to their communities include charitable donations, employee volunteer incentive programs and company matching gifts for education. Arrow also partners with many local nonprofit and charitable organizations that offer enrichment and assistance in the areas of education, arts and culture, the environment, health and human services, and disaster relief. In 2008 alone, Arrow has contributed to more than 70 nonprofit organizations in its communities, across the country and around the world.
