Supplier Part Numbering Policies and Challenges

Developing Your Plan | Inventory Advice | Order Placement | Supplier Communications

The Issue: Not all component suppliers are planning to change their base part number when they transition an existing component to a lead-free/RoHS compliant version . Your business processes will need to separately identify the previous non-RoHS compliant parts from the new RoHS compliant versions.

Unfortunately, those suppliers that choose not to modify their part numbers as they transition to compliant versions of their parts makes the process of ordering, identifying and keeping lead-free and leaded part inventories more challenging for some.

We recommend having clear, reliable mechanisms to:

  • Make your RoHS requirements clear on forecasts and purchase orders
  • Ensure receiving processes are set up to validate receipt
  • Store inventories of old non-compliant and new compliant parts separately
