Since component supplier policies vary related to part number changes, it's important to consider the following questions:

  • How will I order the compliant version?
  • How will I continue to order the existing (non-compliant) version until I'm ready to switch over our production?
  • How does this issue impact our electronic forecasting/ordering procedures?

Part numbering systems to keep compliant BOMs, components, materials, boards, and finished goods separate from their non-compliant predecessors are key. The creation of internal part nomenclature changes is one strategy for managing the transition of parts from non-compliant to compliant versions for everyone in the supply chain, from suppliers to distributors to EMSs and OEMs this is particularly effective in eCommerce trading.

If you share your forecasts and/or firm orders with your supplier partners via EDI, be aware that this process does not allow for a RoHS identifier. In instances where a supplier has changed the composition of their part to become compliant, but has not changed their base part number, you must find another way to communicate which version of the part you want to receive.
